Spring is a traditional time to focus on our home environment. With the chaos in everyday life, it is important to have a physical center where we can relax and recharge. Cleaning can become an act of spiritual service we do to honor ourselves, our visitors, and the objects with which we choose to surround ourselves.
The Chinese use Feng Shui to align objects in their space to best harness the natural flow of chi. Energy can become stagnant in our environment if we allow forgotten corners to become a mirror of our shadow selves and build up dust and debris.
If you are someone who doesn't know how to clean and can't fathom where to begin, start by burning sage and imagining stuck energy being released. Open a window and let the smoke carry out old thoughts, feelings and emotions into the sunshine. Light a candle and invoke the Goddess Hestia. Hestia is the Greek Goddess of the hearth and domesticity. A sacred flame was lit in ancient homes in her honor and never allowed to go out. We can call on her energy when we want to beautify our home.
After your invocation, its time to begin the real work of cleaning. If you feel overwhelmed, use 'the five minute fix' and work on one area for five minutes at a time, then reward yourself by doing something you enjoy. Keep going back and fourth until you have tidied a corner and then begin work on the next one. Rewards are a wonderful way to inspire ourselves to complete daunting tasks, and five minutes is a good amount of time to tackle something in small steps.
Sacred housekeeping can become a joy and a reward when our space is flowing with fresh energy. Make your home a sacred chapel where divine energy flows.
