Dreaming A Life

In the book Dreamways of the Iroquois, Honoring the Secret Wishes of the Soul, by Robert Moss, the author discusses the power of dreams to shape our lives. He quotes the Seneca when he writes that 'the dream world is the real world.' He discusses his dreams in which he speaks what was later found to be an old form of the Mohawk language. He writes about encountering all manner of dream characters who lead him on a journey deep into his psyche and the culture of the Iroquois.

Dreams offer us a powerful connection to our subconscious and are one of the tools we can use to connect with our deeper selves. It helps to keep a dream journal in which you honor these messengers by writing them out. Dream journals are an excellent source for self exploration and give us a dictionary of our own symbols which we can then use to decipher our ongoing conversation with the Universe in our waking life.

The more we cultivate our dreams, the more information they can offer us not only on the deep psychological issues we are working on, but also precognition of our daily lives. Moss writes: "As shamanic dream journeyers, the Iroquois developed the practice of sending out dream scouts. The Jesuit missionaries were often astounded at the extraordinary foreknowledge and insight of the Iroquois 'sorcerers' they encountered." This is a talent which anyone can develop if they honor the importance of their dreams.

Moss discusses the dream work he does with groups and relates the story of Turtle Woman, a native healer who dreams of ways to help her people reclaim the power of their dreams. Moss writes, "She reminded us not only that we dream things before they happen in waking life, but also that dreaming is part of the process of manifestation. In dreaming, we are present at the creation of the events that unfold in the surface world. She had also demonstrated, indelibly, that dreaming is real medicine and gives us tools for healing..." Dreaming is the point of power where we are able to use raw substance to create those events and objects we will use in our 'surface life' to build our realities.

We can use dreams to workshop the lives we wish to create for ourselves and also to understand the deeper aspects of what we have already created. As we become more adept at walking in our dreamspace, we can create upon the palette of light those things we wish to see in our waking lives. We can become lucid not only in dreams, but also in our daytime lives as well.
