Lakshmi is the Goddess of prosperity, beauty, fertility, and good fortune in the Hindu religion. She is the daughter of the Goddess Durga and the consort of the God Vishnu.
Lakshmi arose from the sea fully formed standing on a lotus and is known as the daughter of the milky ocean. Hindus believe that Lakshmi bestows abundance and wealth on all of her deserving worshippers. The word "Lakshmi" is derived from the sanskrit word for "goal," so Lakshmi represents using the resources and abundance of the Universe to reach our goals, be they worldly or spiritual.
Her arms symbolize spiritual values, and her palm is always outstretched to offer her followers an unending supply of prosperity. Meditation on her image opens the mind to the archetype of Lakshmi and releases a subconscious resonance with her qualities.
Her mantra is:
Ohm Mahalakshmyaye VidmaheVishnupriyaye Dhi-Mahi Tanno Lakshmth Prachodayat .
